SAMATHA MEDITATION
A technique to settle, calm & concentrate the Mind in preparation for Vipassana.
VIPASSANA MEDITATION
Developing insight through direct experience into the nature of Mind & Body.
Within each guided meditation we practice 30 minutes walking meditation, 30 minutes sitting meditation and a few minutes of Metta (loving-kindness).
The Vipassana meditation technique taught in this course is in the Mahasi Noting style. We use mental noting with labels to develop awareness of Mind and Body at the present moment.
The course is conducted fully online and designed to fit within your normal everyday life. All you need is a quiet space to meditate two hours daily, whenever suits your schedule best.
Vipassanā (विपश्यना), meaning “clear seeing” or “insight,” is a practice of meditation that allows us to gain profound awareness of the present moment. It is also known as Insight Meditation, a technique that helps cultivate clarity, peace, and a deep understanding of our experiences.
What do we practice to see clearly?
We practice becoming fully aware of the Mind and Body in each moment.
Mind includes our thoughts, feelings, intentions, and consciousness, while the Body encompasses sensory experiences, movements, and sensations. In essence, it is our subjective experience of Self and World.
The Practice
Vipassana meditation teaches us to observe Mind and Body without interferring. Instead of struggling, resisting, or trying to change our experiences, we learn to rest into a calm, non-judgmental awareness. We practice cultivating equanimity (Upekkhā) with every sensation, thought, or feeling, letting each come and go naturally, without attachment or aversion.
The Path to Freedom
As we continue our practice, we begin to recognize and free ourselves from harmful patterns of thought, speech, and action. Vipassana helps us cultivate a spontaneous and wholesome way of living, grounded in clarity and understanding.
A Timeless Practice
Vipassana is the meditation technique that the Buddha practiced over 2,500 years ago to attain his awakening. While traditionally practiced in Buddhist contexts, it is a scientifically rigorous and non-sectarian practice, which has led to its widespread popularity in the West today.
The Side Effects of Practice
Freedom and Happiness
Over time, the practice calms the hindrances and behaviours that stand in the way of happiness and freedom to be who we are.
Improved Relationship
Transforming how we relate to our Self and others. As we become more kind and understanding of ourselves it naturally flows over to those around us.
Effortless Non-distraction
Directing your mind intentionally, there is less worry, rumination and distraction. We become more fully present and intimate with our life.
Course Requirements
Follow the 5 precepts during the course
The 5 Precepts are five guidelines for behaviour that will create the right conditions for meditation practice.
1. Abstain from Killing
2. Abstain from Stealing
3. Abstain from False Speech
4. Abstain from intoxicating Substances
5. Abstain from Sexual Misconduct
Create the space and time to do your daily meditations
A quiet and comfortable space to meditate in the morning and evening where distractions are at a minimum. You can sit in a chair, cross-legged or in the kneeling position. We recommend not squeezing everything you normally do into these 10 days or the meditations will quickly turn into "another thing on the to-do list". Perhaps that means cutting back on usual activities or use of technology in order to learn this technique properly.
Do your best to attend or watch the talks & Q&A sessions
These will help you understand how and why we are practising.
What is NOT required?
You don't need to have the perfect lotus posture or even sit cross-legged to learn meditation.
You don't need to maintain Noble Silence for this course. The course is designed to fit within a daily life and the value of this course is also to learn how to practice Vipassana amidst your life.
